Abstract

ABSTRACT TO design buildings in areas with significant snowfall, information is needed for predicting roof snow loads as a function of ground snow loads. A small building, constructed at 2470 m elevation in Montana's Little Belt Mountains, was instrumented with a hydraulic system designed to enable measurement of snow accumulation on the roof. The ratio of roof snow load to snow load on the ground was generally in the range of 0.3, con-siderably below that which would be recommended for design purposes by current codes and standards.
