Abstract

Urban planning involves a wide-ranging survey programming; whereby the data collected can be processed through a systematic methodology in order to summarize the data collected. This data shall further be used to analyze and frame a developmental strategy. As per nomenclature, GIS comprises of 3 words: Geography, Information and System. Spatial part is dealt by “Geography”, Data related part is dealt by “Information” and decision-making related part is dealt by “System”. It is essentially a computer-based information system which attaches a variety of qualities and characteristics to specific geographical locations and subsequently helps in planning through decision making. In this paper, the combined role of GIS and planning survey using conventional methods shall be seen. In conventional methods, the data is usually processed using MS-Excel or software of similar kind. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to gather, analyze and present data, is fast becoming the norm for many industries including construction. GIS models and maps are making technical reports much more accessible and visually engaging for the end user. For the present study, a core city area has been considered for conducting the survey with respect to certain tangible issues to comprehend how urban planning survey might be conducted to infer certain issues using GIS as a tool for improved understanding.
