Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare and critique three traditional research methods: quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. The article begins with a review from some research papers relating to the comparison of quantitative and qualitative methods. Definitions, Characteristics, strengths and limitations are discussed. Research papers have been examined and analysed in order to critique how these three methods have been applied in applied linguistics. It concludes that the best method depends on the knowledge of researchers, research questions and research purpose.
