Abstract

Recently, E. Erikson and his colleagues have been able to identify the src-gene-specific molecule, designated pp60src, using sera from tumor-bearing rabbits (TBR sera) that had been inoculated with a high dose of Schmidt-Ruppin strain of avian sarcoma virus, subgroup D (SRD ASV) (Brugge and Erikson 1977). It has been characterized as a phosphoprotein (Brugge et al. 1978; Levinson et al. 1978) and was found to be closely associated with a protein kinase activity that phosphorylates the heavy chain of IgG (Collett and Erikson 1978). A temperature-sensitive mutant of a sarcoma virus was shown to be associated with a thermolabile protein kinase that was suggestive for the kinase activity being virus-coded (Collett and Erikson 1978; Levinson et al. 1978; Rübsamen et al. 1979). This was supported by another line of independent evidence, which came from the observation that pp60src obtained by in vitro translation of viral RNA is also associated with...
