Abstract

This paper predicts the added power and propeller revolution due to irregular head waves for a 1,800 TEU container ship. Resistance tests were conducted with 11 regular waves and irregular waves at SS = 5. Time series (TS) and autocovariance analysis methods were applied to estimate statistical variables and uncertainties. The paper investigated the statistical convergence times of measured data. The wave elevation, heave and pitch motions obtained from the TS agree well with those from spectral analysis in regular and irregular waves. The added resistance from the TS is larger than that from spectral analysis using a regular wave test by 6.1%. The characteristics of response operators and spectra of the added (or reduced) propulsion performances and overload factors are discussed. The power and propeller revolution were evaluated with a variety of methods: SA(LVM-W), LVM-IR, DPM, and RTIM.
