Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate differences in postoperative levels of satisfaction regarding current activities, interpersonal relationships, and body image of ulcerative colitis patients who had chosen to undergo either a pouch or an ileostomy operation. In addition, we hypothesized that patients who showed greater fear of bodily damage would choose the pouch operation. The same surgeon carried out all the operations. Follow-up periods varied between 3 months and 10 years. We contacted patients and asked them to complete a questionnaire and return it by mail. Similar numbers of patients from both groups reported satisfaction with their operation, suggesting that patient involvement in the choice of operation is an important factor in postoperative satisfaction. As predicted, fear of bodily damage discriminated between the groups.
