Abstract

In this paper, the benefit of a Predictive PI controller to the problem of controller structure selection with respect to a process with significant time delay is demonstrated. In particular, the performance of PID controller designed by pole placement technique and a predictive PI controller are compared. The mentioned controllers were used for a combustion control design which is characterized with significant time delay. The class of combustion control considered, designed and evaluated is for a process with one input (flow of air) and one output (oxygen content). Implementation details such as selection of tuning parameters are discussed. Simulation results for the two controllers are compared and discussed.
