Abstract

Objective To compare the periodontal indices between the use of self-ligating brackets and conventional pre-adjusted brackets. Methods Eighty patients (12 to 18 years old) were divided into 2 groups (group A: 40 patients with self-ligating brackets and group B: 40 patients with conventional pre-adjusted brackets). Periodontal indices (GI, PLI, SBI and PD) were examined in both groups. Results No difference was found in the indices recorded between the two groups after 6months of treatment. Conclusions Self-ligating brackets did not have an advantage over conventional brackets with respect to the periodontal status. Key words: Self-ligating brackets; Orthodontic appliances; Periodontal indices
