Abstract

This study reports on the main problems of coastal erosion around Cheju Island, Korea. Field surveys showed that main causes of severe cliff erosion is the differential weathering of geological strata, for instance, alternating bands of durable sandstone and less durable shale. Experimental work showed that such durability against coastal erosion can be expressed in terms of slake durability. It is suggested that the slake durability test is a good tool for the quantitative assessment of the sensitivity of rock to coastal erosion.
