Abstract

Noise immunity comparison of different methods of modulation is presented for analog data transmission over laser links with the direct detection signal. Conditions are found when the background noise is actually suppressed due to the application of short pulse techniques. The modulation formats of frequency modulated subcarrier, pulse code and pulse interval modulations are determined by calculating the threshold signals for the required r.m.s. error of the recovered analog data. it is shown that comparative results depend on the shape of data spectrum and that the frequency modulated subcarrier is as effective as the pulse code modulation.
