Abstract
Aluminium alloy (AA) based composites are finding wide acceptance in industries due to high performance efficiencies and superior properties. AA6061 based composites have found wide applicability in aerospace, automobiles and recreational industries. Hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) have proved to have improved performance and excellent adaptability compared to single reinforced composites. In the present study, two compositions of HMMCs were fabricated using conventional stir casting route. AA6061 is used as the matrix material and nano SiC/B4C as reinforcements. Physical properties like density and porosity and mechanical properties like micro hardness, ultimate tensile strength and impact strength of these HMMCs were investigated and compared with single reinforced micro/nano composites. The HMMC was found to have improved mechanical properties. Significant improvement in ductility and porosity was seen when composites were reinforced with nano size reinforcements.
