Abstract

Intravenous magnesium sulfate is used for the prevention of eclamptic seizures, fetal neuroprotection, and tocolysis for preterm labor. It is recommended that a 4-6 g load be administered followed by a 2 g/hr maintenance dose. A therapeutic range of 4.8-8.4 mg/dL has been targeted, at least for the prevention of eclamptic seizures. The purpose of this study was to compare 4- vs. 6-gram loading and ability to achieve a therapeutic level.
