Abstract

Locust borer attacks on black locust trees were compared on 9 strip-mined and 14 unmined sites in Maryland. Current attack rates were significantly higher on the strip-mined sites. Tree size and form and several soil factors were significantly different between sites. Survival of borers from the larval to the adult stage, determined by trapping of adults, was significantly greater on strip-mined sites, and beetle survival rates from the larval to adult stage on all sites increased with increasing attack density.
