Abstract

Failure criteria are presented for two important failure modes due to high temperature, cyclic operation of the fusion reactor first walls. The failure modes are: cyclic damage at elevated temperature, and the propagation and growth of flaws. Lifetime calculations of a cylindrical fusion reactor first wall based on these failure criteria are presented. When the lifetime results are compared, it is found that the propagation and growth of flaws is more limiting.
