Abstract

The packed cell volume (P.C.V.) of heavy-type, brown egg commercial strains of chickens carrying a gene, Co, the key Columbian plumage pigmentation restriction gene, was significantly lower than that of Leghorn-type commercial white egg strains. There was no correlation between P.C.V. and body weight within strains and the differences were not influenced by the gene for dominant white (I) or E, e- alleles. The decreased P.C.V. was due primarily to decreased numbers of circulating erythrocytes.
