Abstract

The paper describes a method of comparing geostrophic winds derived from constant pressure surfaces with observed winds. The differences in heights of the constant pressure surfaces between five pairs of stations in India have been calculated using upper wind data for two levels viz. 850 mb and 700 mb, The differences have also been obtained from the data of radio sonde ascents. These values have been compared and correlation coefficients have been worked out. Similar computations have been made for some cases in the British Isles. Some plausible explanations for the comparatively lower values of correlation coefficients for the Indian stations have been given.
