Abstract

Isolation between gas switches and trigger cable is very important to protect trigger generator in FLTD cavity, the leakage of traditional water solution resistors during long lifetime operation may cause serious insulation problem. In this paper, a six-gap gas spark switch is applied to investigate the influence of isolation methods with resistors and inductors on the amplitude and rise time of trigger pulse, triggered breakdown performance of the switch, formation of multi discharge channels and isolation effect when self-breakdown occurs. The results indicate that the amplitude decreases and the rise time of trigger pulse turns to be longer with the increase of resistance and inductance. Isolation with inductor of several μH is highly recommended for FLTD cavity. It has some advantages in reducing switch jitter, getting better isolation effect and reliability of the switch for long lifetime operation in FLTD. 1 $$\int\limits_{{t_{st} }}^{{t_{br} }} {Vdt} = \lambda ,\quad V = \left\{ {\begin{array}{*{20}l} 0 \hfill & {for\;\;\left| {U(t) - U_{st} } \right| \le U_{st} ,} \hfill \\ {U(t) - U_{st} } \hfill & {for\;\;\left| {U(t) - U_{st} } \right| > U_{st} .} \hfill \\ \end{array} } \right.$$
