Abstract
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a surgical procedure which effectiveness and regularity of results are remarkable by providing: pain relief, improvement of function, and quality of life. The aim of our work is to compare the functional outcome and patient quality of life after total hip replacement according to indication: degenerative hip disease or inflammatory hip disease. Prospective study of 175 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (35 bilateral), followed in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, from January, 2011 to December, 2015. All patients underwent preoperative assessment, after one and two months of surgery, taking joint range of motion, Visual Analog pain Scale (VAS), Postel-Merl d’Aubigne's (PMA) score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) Index. Our study included 175 patients, including 100 women (59.28%) and 75 men (40, 71%). The average age of our patients was 51.19 years. A total of 96 patients (56.42%) were followed for inflammatory hip disease and 78 patients (43.57%) for degenerative hip disease. All patients had a satisfactory outcome in all joint range of motion, with considerably higher results for patients followed for degenerative hip disease. VAS decreased from 8.5 to 3.5, with an improvement of PMA score and WOMAC Index. Total hip prosthesis gives good functional results in degenerative hip disease, and results are lower in inflammatory disease with a significant improvement in quality of life (WOMAC Index) in both groups.
