Abstract

Recent fatigue design codes are mostly limited at 50 or 60 mm wall thickness, if they allow more, then the resistance data, especially for fatigue, often rely on extrapolations which sometimes might be discussed. Existing verification procedures such as nominal stress, structural stress, notch stress and fracture mechanics methods are critically revised for wall thicknesses of 100 mm. Fatigue tests on thick-walled cruciform joints have been collected from literature and have been compared with the regulations of codes and the IIW recommendations for fatigue. The resulting differences have been critically reviewed, and recommendations for application of the assessment methods were given.
