Abstract

In this paper, two methods are presented to analyse failure mode and effects using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the REMBRANDT system. Failure mode and effects analysis is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making technique in terms of three different criteria: occurrence, severity and detection. AHP has been criticised for rank reversal phenomenon caused by the addition or deletion of an alternative. This paper shows the fact that the rank reversal phenomenon occurs in the AHP, but this is not a perfectly valid phenomenon in REMBRANDT system and ranks will be preserved. We use the proposed method to illustrate its application at a hydraulic gear pumps manufacturer.
