Abstract
Enterococci are important causes of hospital-acquired infections worldwide. Enterococci are inherently resistant to cephalosporins and aminoglycosides, and can acquire new resistance mechanisms during therapy. Vancomycin resistance occurs through acquisition of the vanA or vanB operons. Discrepancies in vancomycin resistance determination among different antimicrobial susceptibility testing systems have been reported.
