Abstract

The EER transmission system was introduced to exploit high efficiency switching power amplifiers in the high PAPR transmission systems such as QAM and OFDM. However, due to transient attenuation characteristics of the tuned switching power amplifiers, EER systems suffered from low power efficiency in the actual transmission systems. EPWM architecture was introduced to improve power efficiency of the EER system by avoiding slow transient attenuation of input current of switching power amplifier. However, EPWM architecture had a problem of high peak switch voltage and low power efficiency. This paper proposes a novel EPWM-EER architecture which improves peak switch voltage and power efficiency of the conventional EPWM architecture with keeping faster transient attenuation than the conventional EER architecture. ADS simulation results show that the proposed EPWM-EER architecture has higher power efficiency than the conventional EPWM architecture and faster transient attenuation than the conventional EER architecture.
