Abstract

We compare the energy, momentum and angular momentum contents per unit length of various types of electromagnetic beams. The types are: transverse magnetic (TM), transverse electric (TE), ‘linearly polarized’ (‘LP’), self-dual TM+iTE, and self-dual ‘circularly polarized’ (‘CP’). Self-dual beams are those unchanged by the duality transformation E→B,B→−E. The comparison is made for beams based on the same scalar wavefunction. Two parameters are varied: the azimuthal winding number m, and the degree of tightness of focus. All the results given are exact.
