Abstract

The present experimental study investigates the vitiation effects of heated test gas on combustor performance in a direct-connect dual-mode scramjet. Wall pressures were compared under two different types of heated gas conditions. One condition was generated with a combustion heater, and the other with an electric heater. Gaseous H2 was used as the fuel at various equivalence ratios. Considering flame holding and mode transition, there were major differences between the combustion heater and electric heater cases. In the dualmode, matching test gas total enthalpy rather than total temperature was more efficient at mitigating vitiation effects from the standpoint of generating similar combustor wall pressure values.
