Abstract

Background: Dental retention is a state of pathogenicity that affects deciduous, permanent and supernumerary teeth. The complications associated with dental retention can be related to mechanical, neurological, infectious or tumoral nature and, therefore, the surgical removal of impacted third molars is performed. According to studies, periodontal assessment after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars has raised questions about the direct result of this surgery on the subsequent formation of periodontal pocket, loss of epithelial or connective tissue cells and even bone loss in the second molar.
