Abstract

ABSTRACTA commercially available (Gene‐Trak®) DNA hybridization (DNAH) test was compared with conventional cultural methods for detection of salmonellae in naturally contaminated dairy cow ground beef. All subsamples which were Salmonella‐positive by cultural methods were also positive by DNAH. There was a small percentage (3.7%) of false‐positive subsamples by the DNAH method, but there were no false‐negative results. The DNAH test appears to be a reliable method for detection of salmonellae in ground beef.
