Abstract

The control forces required to stabilize wheeled inverted pendulum (WIP) systems are dependent on sufficient tractive force between the wheels and ground. The brush tire and Coulomb friction models of tractive force are presented and evaluated in the context of WIP systems. Simulation results demonstrate a high degree of similarity between the two traction models for behaviors related to slip onset and gross WIP motion.
