Abstract

By direct comparison of numerical results for a number of cooling tower geometries, various analytical design tools are evaluated for stability checks of cooling tower shells subjected to quasistatic wind loadings. The most complete and expensive method is full geometric nonlinear analysis, while the simplest and cheapest is a bifurcation analysis for an equivalent axisymmetric loading. For the geometries considered, the equivalent axisymmetric loading approach provides a conservative estimate of the elastic stability limit.
