Abstract

The focus of this study was to ascertain the superiority of pulsed lavage irrigation in removing bacteria from a complicated orthopedic wound in 12 male Spanish-Boer goats. The animals all received a 5-cm incision to the tibial tubercle of the left lower extremity, which included crush injury to the anterior muscle compartment, thermal injury from electrocautery, periosteal elevation from the bone, and cortical bone compromise with a drill twist-bit. Next, the wounds were inoculated with bioluminescent strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and allowed to incubate for 6 hours.
