Abstract

1. 1. Basic haematological values in the peripheral blood of adult clinically healthy Grévy's zebras ( Equus grevyi), estimated during the summer and winter seasons, were compared. 2. 2. No sex-related differences were seen with the exception of an increased red cell count in males during the summer season. 3. 3. In 26 animals (four males and 22 females) sampled during the summer season, significantly higher haematocrit and haemoglobin values were noted than in 40 zebras (11 males and 29 females) sampled during the winter season. 4. 4. No differences were recorded in the leucocyte counts, but an increased proportion of neutrophils and decreased proportion of lymphocytes were seen in the summer season. 5. 5. The present findings are compared with those abstracted from the literature and discussed.
