Abstract

This paper presents a finite element computer programme to solve one-dimensional consolidation problem of single and multiple clay problems with two different boundary conditions and uniform pore pressure. Three examples were provided in which the soil profile consists of one, two and four layered clay soils. The numerical results were successfully checked against available analytical solutions of single and layered consolidation problems. Using the solution obtained, graphs for degree of consolidation versus time factor relations were prepared and the relevant consolidation behavior of single or layered soils is discussed. The results demonstrate the applicability of the finite element model and the efficiency of the computer program developed.
