Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the collagen synthetic abilities of water extracts of green tea (GT), white tea (WT) and black tea (BT) in human dermal fibroblasts. In MTT assay, the maximum permissible level for GT, WT and BT was over 200 μg/mL, and that for EGCG was 50 μg/mL. In the experiment of type-I procollagen synthetic ability, TGF-β1 (positive control) increased it by 179% (p⁄0.001) at the concentration of 5 ng/mL, compared to the control group. At the concentrations of 12.5, 25, and 50 μg/mL, EGCG increased it by 49.3, 80.1 (p⁄0.01), and 141.6% (p⁄0.001), GT increased it by 8.3, 48.1, and 98.5% (p⁄0.01), WT increased it by 10.3, 38.6, 110.4% (p⁄0.05), and BT increased it by 89.5 (p⁄ 0.01), 96.9 (p⁄0.01), and 114.5% (p⁄0.01), respectively. The order of high to low sequence for the collagen synthetic ability was EGCG¤BT¤WT and GT. It was conformed that GT, WT and BT had high collagen synthetic abilities, and they could be a useful functional natural source for the anti-wrinkle cosmetic materials.
