Abstract

Multilevel inverters (MLI) are gaining importance in industries, utilities and in research area due to their high voltage and power applications. Several switching techniques have been recommended for refining the quality, working performance and operation of the inverters. The paper presents two technique multi carrier pulse width modulation (MCPWM) and optimized harmonic stepped waveform (OHSW) for the multilevel inverter (MLI) in order to lessen the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage. Moreover, the paper presents the comparison between MCPWM and OHSW technique and shows the advantages of OHSW technique over the MCPWM technique. On comparing the FFT based result for fifteen level multilevel inverter, it has been observed that in OHSW technique odd order harmonic are largely reduced and even order harmonic are almost eliminated.
