Abstract

Ruffine and DeWolf calculated and compared the incoherent part of the direct-polarized (using the first Born approximation) with the cross-polarized (using the second Born approximation) backscattered cross sections of an underdense plasma when irradiated by an incident plane electromagnetic wave. They did not calculate the incoherent direct-polarized component of the backscattered cross section, QDI, from the second Born approximation. Since this quantity is expected to be many times greater than the incoherent cross-polarized backscattered cross section QCI, it is calculated here by using the second Born approximation. Some observables associated with reentry physics and allied subjects are functions of the direct-polarized and the cross-polarized backscattered cross sections. Therefore the ratios QCI/QB and QDI/QB are calculated and analyzed for various scattering configurations and correlation functions. Whenever there is any change in the backscattered return due to the change of the polarization of the incident field, it is due to QDI only (within the limit of the second Born approximation).
