Abstract

Phenol red inhibits the 131I uptake by chick thyroids during in vitro incubation. Chick thyroids take up more 131I during in vitro incubation after Tapazole pretreatment, whereas guinea pig thyroids, which take up less 131I, are not affected by Tapazole pretreatment. Chick thyroids incorporate a higher proportion of 131I into organic fractions than do guinea pig thyroids. A possible explanation for this effect is discussed. During in vitro incubation chick thyroids form thyroxine plus triiodothyronine and/or diiodothyronine.
