Abstract

This paper explores some aspects of the relationship between information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) curricula. In particular, it presents a discussion of an existing BS in Information Systems (BSIS) and how it might relate to a proposed BS in Information Technology (BSIT). The IS degree is one of the many BSIS programs located outside of business schools. It closely follows the IS 2002 model curriculum and it is accredited by ABET under the new IS accreditation criteria. The IT degree also is intended to be patterned after draft model curricula, draft accreditation criteria, and existing four year IT degrees. The paper focuses on similarities and differences between IT and IS degree programs. It considers how the curriculum for one degree might enrich the other degree. The paper also explores the issue of accreditation for degree programs in IT and IS, and how those criteria might affect differences between the degrees.
