Abstract

The April 1987 issue of the Climate Diagnostics Bulletin of the U.S. National Weather Service contains a set of eight maps of sea surface topography of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, derived from the GEOSAT altimeter by Laury Miller and Robert Cheney (National Geodetic Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Rockville, Md.). The maps cover the area between 8°N and 8°S and from 174°E to 114°W, are contoured at intervals of 2 cm, and cover the period from December 1, 1986, to March 15, 1987, at intervals of 15 days. Contours range from a maximum of +14 cm to a minimum of −16 cm. The data are obviously smoothed in both time and space and show features with meridional scales of a few hundred kilometers and zonal scales of a few thousand kilometers.
