Abstract

Frigo and fresh plants are two types of plants used in Italy for annual strawberry plantations. Frigo plants are mostly used in the central northern areas of Italy, while the use of fresh plants is now increasing a lot in southern strawberry production areas. The aim of this work was the evaluation of frigo and fresh plant adaptability of 10 strawberry genotypes ('Adria', 'Alba', 'Clery', 'Irma', 'Onda' and 'Sveva', 'AN97.120.52', 'AN99.78.51', '97.129.11' and '98.86.6') to non-fumigated, chalky and clay soil. For two production cycles (2006 and 2007), frigo and fresh plants of each genotype were planted in the last week of July, including three replications of 10 plants, for genotype and type of plants. The plant-genotype effect was studied by detecting plant grow (number of shoot, leaves, leaf petiole length), plant productivity (total commercial production and fruit weight) and fruit quality (colour, firmness, soluble solids and titratable acidity). To these specific cultivation conditions, fresh plants resulted with a very low adaptability in comparison to frigo, for all genotypes tested.
