Abstract

Statement of the Problem: There are 2 different fixation techniques commonly used in clinical settings to stabilize a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO). We used a finite element computer modeling technique to simulate BSSRO with 2 fixation techniques commonly used in clinical settings. Experimental measurement of the mandibular mechanical characteristics, although not impossible, is limited due to restrictions in number and type of data points, cost, patient availability, and other factors. Using the modeling approach, based on the fundamental laws of physics and mechanics, we compared the differences in the stability of the mandibular structure and the mechanical stresses at the osteotomy sites for the 2 fixation techniques.
