Abstract

Abstract The performance of Duroc (16), Hampshire (16), and Large White (16) pigs (comprising equal numbers of gilts and boars) was compared on ad libitum feeding over the liveweight range 25–85 kg. Large White pigs had significantly higher voluntary feed intakes and growth rates than Duroc and Hampshire pigs which did not differ significantly. Feed conversion ratios, exressed on a liveweight and carcass weight basis, were similar for the breeds. Carcass backfat measurements did not differ between the Hampshire and Duroc pigs but were, on average, 2–5 mm greater in the Large White pigs. Hampshire pigs had the largest eye muscle areas in cross section, and the musculature was paler and had a higher drip loss than the other breeds. Pale, soft, exudative musculature was found in only 2 Hampshire carcasses.
