Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare and rank the descriptive validity for five alcoholism typologies. Five typology systems were applied. These included the presence or absence of 1) primary alcoholism, 2) drug abuse or dependence, 3) antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), 4) early-onset alcoholism, and 5) parental alcoholism. The rank order (mean rank) from best to worst typology was presence or absence of ASPD (2.28), drug abuse or dependence (2.44), early-onset alcoholism (2.94), primary alcoholism (330), and parental alcoholism (4.03). Documenting DSM-III Axis I drug abuse or dependence comorbidity and Axis II ASPD comorbidity is a valid alcoholism typology strategy.
