Abstract

Summary The micromorphology of the fresh-water strain Chroomonas sp. Pringsheim (978/2 CCAP) is compared with that of the saline strain Chroomonas salina Butcher (978/20 CCAP). Their distinctive features are related to the ultrastructure of previously described members of the Cryptophyceae whereby particular attention is directed to those which show similarities in morphology and/or name. Possible taxonomic implications of these observations are discussed with reference to the currently available definition of the genus Chroomonas .
