Abstract

The present study was directed towards elucidation of immunological markers in WSSV-infected mud crabs through a comparative study with whiteleg shrimp. Parameters analysed including serum protein levels, bacteriolytic activity, haemagglutination activity, phenoloxidase activity and total haemocyte count. Analyses of above said parameters revealed that during the course of WSSV infection, serum haemagglutinating and phenoloxidase activity in mud crabs did not show any significant change in contrast with the whiteleg shrimps. Possibly, such distinct immune response against WSSV may play an important role in pathogenicity caused by WSSV in the mud crab S. serrata and may contribute to the resistivity against WSSV by these crabs.
