Abstract

This study investigated the fiber laser welding technique for similar and dissimilar butt joints of Ti-6Al-4 V and ZK60A sheets. The effect of input power on hardness, weld depth, and width was examined. Results showed that the input power has a direct effect on weld widths and depths in such a way that by increasing laser welding power, they were increased. In dissimilar welds, magnesium islands were formed with peripheral titanium rings making the microstructure similar to a composite with magnesium islands as a matrix and titanium rings as reinforcement. Such a microstructure tended to improve mechanical properties compared to that of similar joints.
