Abstract

ABSTRACT The subject of roadside accidents involving police vehicles has received little attention by law enforcement agencies and researchers alike. The purpose of this exploratory study is: (1) to provide the frequency of roadside accidents involving police vehicles, other emergency vehicles, and large and small passenger cars in the state of Illinois; (2) to identify the types of vehicles involved in roadside accidents, the time of day, the accident location, and the frequency of injuries; (3) to illustrate from prior literature the human factors assumed to be causal agents in both aircraft and roadside accidents; and (4) to suggest precautionary measures for police agencies regarding roadside accidents. Data from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) were utilized as the basis of our study.
