Abstract

This work presents the determination of the chemical composition of nickel-chromium-based super-alloy Inconel 625 (IN625). The selected material finds wide applications in several industries like marine, aerospace, chemical, etc. This investigation aimed to determine the chemical composition of IN625 using an energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) spectrometer and optical emission spectrometer (OES). The results of the two methods were compared and turned out to be in good accord with each other. The percentage of Ni using EDX was found to be 60.18% while with OES it was found to be greater than 55%. The percentage of other main alloying elements in IN625 specimen using EDX was found to be Cr 19.78% and Mo 7.46%. The values of these elements using the OES technique were Cr 21.805% and Mo 7.460%. Thus, it can be clearly seen that the results of the two techniques are comparable to each other. The finding of this investigation helps establish the authenticity and genuineness of the specimen.
