Abstract

In this work an effort has been made to fabricate and compare the properties of ex situ formed Al/SiCp and in situ formed Al/TiB2 MMCs containing equal amount of reinforcements of 6 wt % of SiCp and TiB2 particles and cast in permanent and sand moulds. The mechanical properties considered are fracture toughness, Tensile strength and Hardness. The mechanical properties are found to be better in the case of Al/TiB2 MMCs compared to Al/SiCp MMCs. The mechanical properties were predicted using FEA and validated by experimental values. The formation of TiB2 is good as per the XRD results. A good number of SiC and TiB2 particles can be observed in the respective SEM micrographs
