Abstract

The conclusion of Stechenberg et al. in their article "Cephalexin Compared to Ampicillin Treatment of Otitis Media" (Pediatrics 58:532, October 1976), that cephalexin is not warranted in the treatment of otitis, is questionable for several reasons. The dose of 50 mg/kg/day of cephalexin has been unsuccessful in our experience and in that of others. That is why the recommended dose for treatment of Haemophilus influenzae is 100 mg/kg/day. The mean cephalexin level in the treatment of middle ear effusion is about 5 mg/ml.
