Abstract

An α-fetal globulin antigenically related to human α-fetoprotein was demonstrated in bovine fetal sera. Antisera were prepared in rabbits against purified fetuin and against fetal bovine sera. These antisera after proper absorption with adult bovine serum detected a new α-globulin which was not detectable in adult bovine sera. Further physicochemical and immunochemical investigation proved this protein to be related to human α-fetoprotein. Further correlation with human α-fetoprotein was found by screening sera of adult animals afflicted with hepatocellular carcinoma in which the fetal protein was demonstrated. Bovine fetuin was found immunochemically unrelated to bovine fetal α-globulin and consequently it is proposed to designate this new globulin as bovine α-fetoprotein.
