Abstract

One of the new DNA techniques, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis is outlined. Simple and low cost sampling and preservation procedures of DNA from live birds are presented, that make it feasible to collect large sample sizes. DNA extraction protocols are listed and it is reported that mitochondrial DNA can be analysed without having to kill the birds. The great potential in building up special collections of avian DNA is emphasized.
